[edit] Description and Significance

Prosthecomicrobium pneumanticm is a freshwater bacterium that has many cellular appendages called prostheca.

[edit] Genome Structure

The genomes of any Prosthecomicrobium bacteria or other closely related bacteria such as Ancalomicrobium have not been sequenced.

[edit] Cell Structure and Metabolism

Prosthecomicrobium pneumanticm is an aerobic chemoorganotroph freshwater bacterium. The body of these bacteria have rigid appendages bounded by the cell wall called prostheca that generally lie in one plane. The cell body itself has been observed to be either spherical or disc-shaped.

Ancalomicrobium are distinguished from Prosthecomicrobium because their appendages are longer and they reproduce by budding. Prosthecomicrobium have shorter, tapering appendages and reproduce by binary fission.
