| Image title | Acinetobacter baumannii bacteria, coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). This bacterium has developed resistance to a number of antibiotics and is increasingly seen in opportunistic infections in hospitals. It typically infects the lungs, leading to a form of pneumonia. It can develop resistance to antibiotics even as they are being used to treat an infection. Because of this, and because it is generally found in weakened patients, the mortality rate for infections with A. baumannii is high. In healthy individuals, however, it is a normal part of the skin flora. Magnification: x11,000 when printed 10 centimetres wide. |

Matthew J. Arduino, DRPH; Janice Carr This SEM depicts a highly magnified cluster of Gram-negative, non-motile <i>Acinetobacter baumannii</i> bacteria; Mag - 13331x. Members of the genus <i>Acinetobacter</i> are nonmotile rods, 1-1.5µm in diameter, and 1.5-2.5µm in length, becoming spherical in shape while in their stationary phase of growth. <i>Acinetobacter spp.</i> are widely distributed in nature, and are normal flora on the skin. Some members of the genus are important because they are an emerging cause of hospital acquired pulmonary, i.e., pneumoniae, hemopathic, and wound infections. |
