There are two distinct iron-uptake systems of this bacterium. One pathway involves the synthesis of siderophores and the other directly binds to heme groups as an iron source [2]. Iron acts as an external electron donor for the bacterium’s metabolic pathways. The bacterium sources iron from the hemoglobin of its host. The various strains of this bacterium are able to grow under anaerobic conditions [4]. In laboratory studies, all strains of T. maritimum were positive for catalase and oxidase.
