The hippocampus is the center of learning and memory. Studies have shown that the gut microbiome can both positively and negatively affect the mechanisms of the hippocampus. Controlling learning is one of the primary functions. The gut microbiome has been shown to result in a significant decline in the cognitive behaviors of study participants. However, some have experienced positive effects based on diet and probiotic intake but has been argued to not be related to the gut microbiome.
