Classification

The Saudi moumouvrius belongs to the genus Mimivirus lineage B.

The family Mimivirdae was discovered inside Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus. The family Mimivirdae is considered as a nucleocytoplasmic large DNA virus (NCLDV) group. Mimivirus is divided into two genera: (1) Mimivirus and (2) Cafeteriavirus. Saudi moumouvirus falls under the first Mimivirus genera as a unique lineage known as lineage B.

SDMV Saudi moumouvirus

Description and Significance

  • insert phylogenetic tree*

The SDMV was discovered inside the cytoplasm of A. polyphaga. The Saudi moumouvirus is the first organism in the Mimivirus lineage B. Shown in blue.

Genome Structure

The SDMV genome consists of 1,046,087 base pairs and is comprised of 2,914 amino acids.

Ecology and Pathogenesis

The SDMV was first isolated from a soil sample in Saudi Arabia. Size and morphology were discovered with the use of an electron microscope with negative staining. The Saudi moumouvirus was isolated from a soil sample in Saudi Arabia at a university hospital. Eight samples of the amoebae, Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus were collected and incubated for two days. A variety of antibiotics were used to prevent bacterial overgrowth.

If relevant, how does this organism cause disease? Human, animal, plant hosts? Virulence factors, as well as patient symptoms.

Mimivirus has been associated with pneumonia, but the Saudi Moumouvirus has never been found in humans. SDMV was the first isolated amoeba to be classified under the subfamily B under Mimivirus.

Amoebas are univellular orrganisms with the capability to mend thier shape. Amoebas are found althroughout the environment, including soil. The Saudi moumouviruswas discovered inside the cytoplasm of the amoeba Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus (APMV). Members of Mimivirus multiple in APMV. In 2013, it was concluded Mimivirus was linked to pneumonia when a Mimivirus was succesfully isolated from a 72 year old pneumonia patient. The Acanthamoeba polyphaga mimivirus has been linked to general respiratory pathogens as well, however, the Saudi Moumouvirus specifically has yet to be found in humans.
