Mesorhizobium loti is a member of rhizobia (rhizobia is a collective name for the genera of Rhizobium, Sinorhizobium, Mesorhizobium, and Bradyrhizobium). They are soil and rhizosphere bacteria which perform nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with leguminous plants.
