<br><i>Neisseria meningitidis</i> is a gram-negative diplococci of the Proteobacteria phylum (7).  This meningococcal bacterium specifically causes disease in humans (1), and is one of the three main bacteria that causes acute bacterial meningitis, along with <i>Streptococcus pneumoniae</i> and <i>Haemophilus influenzae</i>.
