Shewanella frigidimarina

Description and Significance

S. frigidimarina is a uniflagellate (motile) gram-negative rod. This psychrophilic species inhabits the water and sediments on the coast of Antarctica. It is important to humans because of potential biomedical applications and to the environment because of its uses in bioremediation.

Genome Structure

Describe the size and content of the genome. How many chromosomes? Circular or linear? Other interesting features? What is known about its sequence?

Cell Structure, Metabolism and Life Cycle

Interesting features of cell structure; how it gains energy; This species produces polyunsaturated fatty acids that have potential applications in health care and bioremediation of environments affected by petroleum hydrocarbons.

Ecology and Pathogenesis

Habitat; symbiosis; biogeochemical significance; contributions to environment.

If relevant, how does this organism cause disease? Human, animal, plant hosts? Virulence factors, as well as patient symptoms.
