In 1995, Bacillus infernus (sp. nov.)1 was isolated from 2,700 meters (1.6777 miles) below the land surface in the Taylorsville Triassic Basin in Virginia. Bacillus infernus was a strict anaerobe. This bacterium, Bacillus infernus, is the only strictly anaerobic species in the genus Bacillus. It is rod-shaped, measures 0.7µm to 0.8µm by 4µm to 8µm and is non-motile.
