Growth response of a sample fungal species (Cladosporium cladosporioides) to 109Cd or 32P radionuclides, as compared to a non-irradiated control environment [1]. Response was measured by a “return angle”, defined as the angle between the point of maximal radioactivity in the culture medium and the direction of growth of the end portion of a hyphum from each C. cladosporioides spore. A mean “return angle” less than 90 degrees is indicative of mean hyphal growth towards the source of radioactivity. Figure adapted from Microbiology of Extreme Soils Fig. 16.2 [10].
