Description and significance

Describe the appearance, habitat, etc. of the organism, and why it is important enough to have its genome sequenced. Describe how and where it was isolated. Include a picture or two (with sources) if you can find them.

Pathology

Methanosarcina barkeri is an archaea and therefore causes no known diseases. As an interesting side note, M. barkeri may be responsible for up to 17% of the world's atmospheric methane, a known greenhouse gas. Therefore, it is possible that M. barkeri is contributing to global warming.
