Superscript: Fe3+ A prion is a specific protein, normally found in human and animal tissue. This protein, however, has the ability to change its folding pattern. This alternative folding pattern causes degenerative diseases in various mammal species, causing diseases such as "chronic wasting disease" in elk or "mad cow disease."
