Talk:The Development of Pathogenesis in the Zika Virus

From MicrobeWiki, the student-edited microbiology resource

I really the inclusion of a case study to talk about your topic, specially using terminology that we discussed in class, it shows real world application of topics we cover in class. Great work!

• “Zika virus (ZIKV) is a mosquito-borne single stranded, positive sense RNA virus, member of the family Flaviviridae and member of the genus Flavivirus. [2] The main vectors, or carriers, of the virus are Aedes mosquitoes, for instance A. aegypti” – italicize genus and species name, and also A. aegypti is first mentioned in this page so it needs to be full name
• “Zika virus is related to other Flaviviruses: dengue, yellow fever, Japanese encephalitis, and West Nile viruses.” – awkward, maybe reword to make it clear
• “Microcephaly and Social Imapct” – do you mean [social impact]?
• “Huang et al. (2016) discuss the difficulty in evaluating potential infected hosts more than seven days after the initial acquisition of the virus. After seven days, “negative RT-PCR results… do not rule out flavivirus infection.”[38] Furthermore, Huang et al. (2016) report cross reactivity of antibodies between Zika and Dengue viruses. Diagnostics, and vaccine development, are further complicated by possible interactions between Zika and Chikungunya viruses. Therefore a positive diagnosis of Zika virus infection may not always necessarily confer the severe adverse health effects currently associated with the Zika virus, such as the development of microcephaly.” – put the reference in the end because you are still talking about the results from the same paper
• I think you may need to follow the citation example that Dr. S provided in the template instead of putting a pile of links in the reference section
• Overall I think you did a great job on this topic, very thorough and easy to follow. The Zika virus is a hot topic in last few years, as you mentioned in the conclusion part. And your page let me know what people know about Zika so far, and how important the research on this virus is. -Jiayu Chen
