Biosynthesis of 6-deoxythronolide in Erythromycin. Each catalytic module performs a specified chemical reaction that incorporates a ketone substrate into the growing PK chain. Sequential Claisen condensation reactions drive the elongation of the chain. Each module has a different arrangement of catalytic domains, and is highly selective for only one precursor and substrate.
